GOALS FOR TEEN COURT

FOR THE DEFENDANT:

1. To be given a second chance and an opportunity to clear his or her record.

2. To make the teen responsible for his crime rather than allowing the parents to simply pay the fine.

3. To allow the teen to make restitution to the community through public service.

4. To make the teen truly understand that breaking the law is not acceptable, not just by adults, but by peers as well.

5. To give the teen an understanding of what the criminal judicial system is like and what the legal consequences are of breaking the law.

6. To promote self-esteem and motivate self-improvement through positive experiences in community service.

7. To expose the teen to positive peer pressure.

FOR THE TEEN COURT PARTICIPANTS:

1. To learn about the judicial system through first-hand knowledge and experience.

2. Provide a community service by helping other teens break a pattern of criminal behavior before it is started.

3. Have involvement with members of the city administration, and the legal community.

4. To learn that they can have a positive impact upon their community through their actions.

5. Have fun and make new friends from other schools.
